Mid Atlantic Golf Course Reviews
Nature and solitude abound at Eagle's Landing Golf Course in Ocean City, Maryland
Playing at Eagle's Landing Golf Course in Ocean City, Md., can be a singular experience, especially when riding over marshland between holes. The only noise is the clatter of the cart bridge as you roll from green to tee, checking out the sunset, the wildlife or another unique view of one of the extraordinary holes. And even if you deposit a ball or two in the cordgrass, it's worthwhile to disengage, take a peek in all directions and enjoy what makes Eagle's Landing memorable.

A little taste of Europe? Club at Viniterra serves up a glass of Mediterranean style in the Virginia wine country
The Club at Viniterra in New Kent, Va. was established as a private club in 2009, but it was recently opened to the public and is fast developing a reputation as one of Virginia's best golf courses. At 7,725 yards, the Rees Jones design is the longest course in the state. But don't be intimidated, Kevin Dunleavy writes.

Summon the luck of the Irish at Royal New Kent Golf Club in Providence Forge, Virginia
Royal New Kent Golf Club in Providence Forge, Virginia offers up a taste of Ireland. This Old Country-style links course just a few miles off of I-64 (about 25 miles west of Williamsburg) is definitely a distinctive layout in Virginia -- or anywhere else in this part of the globe. If you block out the climate changes and the water -- and remove some of the deciduous forest -- you're right on the shores of Ireland.

Located in a park-rich region of Northern Virginia, General's Ridge is a relatively short public course, where long drives are less effective than accurate placement. There's dog legs, blind holes, hills and ravines aplenty - but it's the slick stiff grass on the greens that will have you struggling to make par.

The words "playable by all levels" or "generous fairways" usually don't come to mind when describing a Pete Dye golf course. But those are descriptions you can believe when it comes to Virginia Beach National. This former TPC course has some typical Dye features, but lacks the sharp edge found on many of his courses.

Stonewall Golf Club in Gainesville, Va. may be public, but it lives like a private club from the well-manicured course to the 13,000-square-foot clubhouse with its coffered ceilings and massive stone fireplace. Set against a backdrop of the Bull Run Mountains and Lake Manassas, this scenic Tom Jackson design is blessed by gently rolling hills and plenty of tall trees.

You can still see cannons on the ridge at Cannon Ridge Golf Club, but now the battles are a little safer as golfers try to defeat this layout. Opened in 2003, it is a 7,100-yard par 71. Today's battles are waged with drivers and putters on L-93 bentgrass, which covers the greens, tee boxes and fairways, and tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass in the roughs.

Billed as "the public's country club," the beauty of the land at Augustine Golf Club, near Washington, D.C., is unmistakable, and course designer Rick Jacobson made good use of it. On most of the tees, you can see the entire hole, including where the bunkers and hazards are. There really aren't any blind shots.
