This course has great potential but needs new ownership
The layout is good with challenging par 4's and 3's, and offering nice views of the James River. The course has not been maintained, it's a mess.
Great property...needs attention
The course is set on a really nice piece of property. The course follows the river for a number of holes and has great views of the 295 bridge crossing the James. The course itself was not terrible, but the grass needed to be cut, the sand traps were in disrepair and the greens were a little beat up. We got on the course on a Saturday morning for under $20.00 a person. You really cant beat that for a weekend rate. With a little care this could once again be a great course.
We liked the course layout, but the maintenance was very poor
The front nine was OK, but the back nine was a disaster. The fairways needed mowing and the ruff was 6 to 8 inches deep. All sand traps were covered in weeds, totally unplayable. We lost 6 golf balls just off the fairways.
Challenging course, rough was tall, greens were in good shape
We grabbed the "Hot Deal" on a hot Saturday afternoon. The staff was super friendly,
They told us in the pro shop that the sand traps were not maintained and should take a free drop out of them. They did indicate they were looking to get them up to speed soon.
Greens were in good shape, if you missed the fairway it was a tough shot from the rough. Enjoyed the course, appreciate the friendliness of the staff and the customer service from the drink cart attendant.
course needs major attention
From when you first roll up to the club house you can tell that this place is been neglected. Things are overgrown and under maintained. When I went to the club house there was no one at the desk because the guy working was actually laying down on the couch watching TV. I was also told upon checking in that the bunkers were in such disrepair that you are allowed a free drop and they were considered ground under repair. The Greens we're in terrible shape, had ball marks everywhere, and we're over watered to the point that they were spongy even though the weather had been dry. The driving range is also closed because it was flooded with water and looked like a swamp. The tee boxes were Covered in crabgrass and dirt on many holes, and the fairways were not much better. It's really a shame because the layout of the course is actually pretty nice, and the neighborhood has beautiful homes that are well maintained. This course NEEDS new management.
Good for the price
Overall this course is okay. It definitely needs to be maintained better and the grass cut more often. With that being said, for the GolfNow price that you pay it's definitely worth it. The back side is a pretty cool design and some of the holes are unlike any other I've played. Nothing special, but I'd definitely play it again
Good course for beginners.
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, mainly because I was playing with an old friend. The course needs work though. All bunkers had grass in them and the greens were not in good shape. The fairways were maintained though. The owners were very nice and hope to be fixing and redesigning soon. Since I am just getting back into golf, it is a good course for me.
Has potential but needs a lot of work.
Bunkers overgrown with weeds and grass. You don't know where the fairway ends and rough behind. Actually parked the golf cart in a fairway bunker and didn't realize it until I drove out. It was tolerable for $11 but would have asked for refund if I payed more.
must have been nicer back in the day
I might give it another visit this summer if im in the area.
Great potential but very poorly maintained
At one time I'm sure this course was top notch, but presently it is very neglected. Fairways are 100% crabgrass and sand bunkers were hard packed sandy clay overgrown with weeds. Greens were actually not bad other than being a little too moist from over-irrigation.
Great layout though. The 18th hole is a must-see. Be sure to play from the back tees and bring a couple extra balls to the tee box.
Poor course in every measurable criteria
Horribly maintained course. Weeds everywhere, especially the bunkers. No way of knowing where fairway ends and rough begins. It appears they have given up on maintaining the course. A real shame because the course is potentially beautiful. Would not pay $5 to play this course.
MAINTAIN ME PLEEEEZE!!
Course screams for maintenance. The bunkers have been taken over by grass and weeds, so bad that my partner and I made an agreement that we would drop out of the bunkers ( or what once was a bunker). Tee boxes are patchy, you had to look for grass on some of them, and the white tee markers were both thrown to one side of the box; not sure what was up with that. Bottom line; if you can get a deal to ride 18 holes for $15 bucks or less you will be okay with that, if you pay their full retail price you will be VERY dissapointed.
Very poor condition but great staff and HOTT cart girls
This course used to be one of the nicest in the area but now has completely fallen.
Going downhill.
Absolutely the worst bunkers I have ever seen. Most were just small ponds. Fairways thin and greens spotty. I have played this course at it's best but sadly it has fallen far behind.
Great potential but poorly maintained
This course was the gem of the RVA in 2004, but owners have let it fall apart. Bunkers have no sand, tee boxes are in bad shape. Challenging layout made tougher by the poor conditions. Slow pace of play with older and mixed foursomes, some fivesomes.
Dog track
I don't play on private courses but this course is the worst course I've ever played. It seems like they are about a week from shutting down. The traps are a joke, no grass in the fairway and the general upkeep is in dismal condition. Save your money and go someplace else.
Course is poorly maintained
Greens were in good shape, but fairways and especially bunkers were not. Weeds growing in all bunkers, no sand, unplayable. Tee boxes were a combination of dirt and weeds cut down. For what we paid thru Golfnow.com, it was ok, but if paying full price, go elsewhere
Needs work.
Over 15 years ago I played this course as it was close by to a job I was doing. Last week I decided to give it a try again. For the $10.00 fee including cart, how could I go wrong? It is painfully evident that this course has been neglected for sometime. Several tee boxes were a mess, the fairways were in need of care and the rough was h@ll. Most every bunker was overgrown. Rakes have not been touched in years as evidenced by all the growth on them. I was surprised to find the greens to be in decent shape. However, it was obvious that pin placement had not been changed in a while. (There was no sign of old pin placements)
Would I return? Well, for $10 or $12 bucks, why not? Good practice!
Staff Friendly, Cost low, Course needs a lot of work
The staff was friendly and pleasant. The green fees were reasonable. However, the course was in a very run down condition, general lack of attention in all areas. Tee boxes on some holes hardly existed. It was real hard to see where fairways and rough began and ended. Greens better than other parts but still below average. It had been a couple of years since I played this course and it needs millions of dollars to get it back in shape. Real shame for such a great location.
The course has gone to the dogs
To put something positive, the greens are still in fairly good shape. Everything else that should be maintained hasn't been. There is no sand in any bunker on the course, most of them are overgrown with weeds. Fairways are just weeds with no real grass, so most of the time you might as well be hitting off of hardpan. There is no drinking water on the course, even though they have water cooler stations set up.
If you don't care at all about course conditions, you can play here for cheap. For me, it wasn't worth the $20 I spent for a round.
Horrible course. One of the worst I have ever Played. The staff are curmudgeonly.
