Garrisons Lake Golf Club
About
Garrisons Lake Golf Club, nine miles north of Dover, is a historic play centrally located to all parts of Delaware. The course is nature friendly: with tree-lined fairways and large, well bunkered greens throughout. Back 9 twice
Front 9 were closed and going under repair so had to play the back 9 twice. The rough was a little thick in some areas and could use a mowing but we just had a ton of rain recently so understandable. Greens weren’t anything special, very playable but needs some work. I got a golfnow.com deal for $16 so it was a wonderful value at that price. Will be back to play again.
Good for beginners
The course maintenance was awful crabgrass everywhere, dead grass, tee boxes were torn up, new and old sod on the greens. Fairways were pretty good loved the layout. It’s a great course for beginners
Needs a lot of work
Greens without much living grass. With the exception of a couple of nice fairways, most were in poor condition with bare spots and crab grass. The rough needs lots of weed control as well.
They have placed some new sod on sections of some greens, one was ringed with a bare strip ready for new sod
Rough is rough!
Dont hit your ball out of the fairway. The grass there is not maintenance well at all. You can lose your ball only two feet off the cart path. Other than that its fine to me. Greens were in need of some love but they were just aerificated.
Slow pace of play
Played 18 today. Was stuck behind a group of 4 older players. They never asked once if I wanted to play through. I was playing by myself today and could have been done an hour earlier
Would be a good course minus 300 trees
I had known about this course for some time but never played it until yesterday. For a state-run course it was in good shape, but the good layout is and playability are sacrificed in favor of leaving the forest untouched.
Overhanging tree limbs block fairway flight lines on nearly every hole and are amplified by a layout with many sharp doglegs. You can hit a shot that rolls out just into the rough (with relatively narrow fairways) or even into one side of the fairway or the other, and find your line to the pin completely blocked with low and/or high branches of gorgeous, majestic weeds.
To his credit, the desk attendant warned me (somewhat sheepishly) that anything into the trees was basically a two stroke penalty. If that was all it was, and the fairways were wider so that a mishit shot earned the demerit, The course would be a fair test. But even well played shots were penalized, if not two stroke in scoring opportunity, then one stroke for having to play below the trees with less carry.
This course would be a gem if they removed about 20 trees per hole (on average) and trimmed back an equal number of others. That way, players who work a draw or fade could play their game.
Greening Up Nicely
The course is really starting to look nice with the spring like weather. Greens are a bit slow, some holes still need to have some of the bigger trees trimmed and bunkers need some new sand. Otherwise the course is in great playing shape and it won’t disappoint.
A faster round of golf
This is a good course. Some holes are quite long and most of the holes favor a fad off the tee so quite difficult for me since I have a draw. The best thing I like about the course is the faster play. I have rarely had over a 4 hour round.
Course showing potential
Played it last season and I would have only rated it 2 stars. This round it was definitely looking better but still has a lot of work to go.
Tee boxes: 4 stars, mostly flat and grass was nice.
Fairways/Rough: 3.5 stars, some holes were nice and then some holes had areas that needed to have work done. Some of the holes have trees that are way to big and should be cut down. (Hole 4).
Bunkers: 1 star, the bunkers where horrendous. Every single bunker needed new sand.
Greens: 4 stars, greens were in good shape. They were aerated a couples weeks ago and they came in nicely. They roll smoothly and the speed is medium.
Overall it’s a nice course with a fun layout. Clear out some more of the bigger trees and redo every bunker and this course would become a 4 star course.
Tough track
I have play here on and off for 30 years Have seen course ups and downs. Nice to see some work going on with clearing of trees. Hope they keep working because it need a lot of love. Tough par 3s. . . Airation of back 9.
cold and windy
they are cutting down a lot of trees and have not done much to clean up the small branches and twigs. this has left the course in a pretty messy state. Most of the.sand traps need some attention but the greens are in great shape.
Garrison Lake
The front 9 was closed. Had to play the back 9, twice. The greens were in terrible shape. Putting was an adventure. The grass in the fairways was hard to distinguish from the grass in the rough, other than height.. Thr Pro Shop was a trailer and had some items for sale. I am told that they are planning on doing some major upgrades in the future. Perhaps that is why the front 9 was off limits? Not sure if it was that or just too wet and soggy to play. To be fair, it was the middle of December when I played and so perhaps the course would be better in the Spring.
This course is not what it use to be
Plenty of parking, but the club house was run out of a double wide trailer. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Over all this golf course was in Very poor condition not at all maintained. I play from the black tee boxes like most good players do and they were not even cut. The fairways were in decent shape but if you landed in the rough, your ball was literally lost in a jungle. The greens were in rough shape very bumpy with weeds growing in with the grass as well as a lot of dead grass areas. The sand traps were pretty hard. Also when I played only the front nine holes were open for play so ended up playing the front nine twice.
