Chesapeake Golf Club
About
Chesapeake Golf Club sits tucked away in the idyllic village of Las Gaviotas, conveniently situated just 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk. Boasting some of the best greens in the Tidewater area, the club offers the amenities of a private club with the fees of a public golf course. The layout will challenge you with rolling fairways and tricky doglegs. Water hazards come into play frequently so be prepared for a few intimidating blind shots over water. Mature trees line the rolling fairways and there are also strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. The manageable 6,278-yard length is approachable for beginners yet there are still holes that long hitters will enjoy. Chesapeake Golf Club is a course that will test your skills but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

Not worth the money
While the course is located in a nice area of town and surrounded by an expensive neighborhood, the facilities are extremely disappointing. To start, the actual condition of the course is not worth the $40 I paid to play. It may be the end of November, but the fairways were no better than a course you could play at half the price such as Kempsville or Ocean View. Cart paths were atrocious. The greens are a redeeming factor…for now. This was my second time playing the course and the greens had been improved, but you could tell that they aren’t taken care of. The many small patches of weeds will likely become large patches. Also, no one repairs divots at this course and the super doesn’t take it upon himself either. Tons of dead spots on the greens. The layout is average, a few interesting holes with water or early dog legs, but still nothing you couldn’t get for cheaper elsewhere. Off course facilities are worse than on course. Take my advice, use the bathroom before you leave home because the bathrooms in the club house haven’t been cleaned in months. Also, you don’t return to the club house after 9 so be sure to use the portable toilet on 7. And if you are expecting a beverage cart, be on the lookout for a regular cart with a cooler in the passenger seat. Suffice it to say, this course is not worth your time and money if you are closer to VB or Norfolk courses like I am. And even if you are in Chesapeake, I’d drive a little further to Battlefield. Sure, their off course facilities are modest at best, but their prices reflect it and the course quality itself makes up for the weekend rate. I will say, I’be played Chesapeake’s sister courses (Honeybee and Stumpy Lake) and the quality of their facilities are much higher. Still pricey for what it is? Yes. But better than Chesapeake by far.
Chesapeake
Terrible range limited to 8i and under, I got there 45 prior to tee time and could not warm up because the ball dispenser was empty.
Slowest pace of play in the world
Conditions were good no complaints there. The absolute slowest pace of play I have ever seen. Left after 12 holes because I couldn’t stand waiting at least 10-15mins on ever single tee box.
They really pack em in
5 1/2 hours to play 18. Three groups backed up at every tee box. Some of the nicest greens in the area as public courses go right now, but they apparently only space their tee times out 4 minutes apart.
Winter golf for a guy from England who spent 20 years in New Jersey brings with it either a vacation or a lot of layers and waterproof clothing. Not in Virginia though and for the last day of the year to play in 60 degree weather it was a blast.
Course is in absolutely fantastic condition for the time of year, greens are great (even if players aren't repairing their ball marks). Bunkers are just awful, but that is no different to any other time I have played the course. Overall though the great weather, great condition of the course and the grouping I had made for a great day.
The only problem I had all day was that I was there on my round all day. 11am tee time and I didn't finish the round until after 4:30. It was a packed course (everyone clearly had the same idea) but nobody from the golf club thought to put marshals out to maintain the pace of play. In fact we hit the turn at 2:30 to speak to guys wo were waiting for a cart for the 1:15 tee time.
Great day (if long) but I love this course and club and cannot wait to go back.
Want to try again
The setting for this course is among a nice neighborhood, yet not too tight. The reason for my title is, this was the first round I've played there and course conditions weren't great. While the days before there wasn't a lot of rain, it was enough to make it a cart paths only day. And while walking out to the fairways from the path, it was obvious there are some serious drainage issues that should be addressed. The course is lined with large oaks and given it was late fall, large amounts of leaves covered many areas. In some cases, if I was slightly off to the side of the fairway, it was a challenge to find the ball amongst the leaves. That combined with the crat paths only slowed our pace. The majority of the greens were in very good shape and the same can be said for the tee boxes. I definitely want to play this course again, perhaps next summer.
Odd Layout
Odd layout - lots of opportunities to lose golf balls in water hazards often find yourself hitting a short iron off the tee followed by a hybrid or fairway wood
Odd course, average conditions
Some of the holes are a little odd to me, small shelfs on greens with a long shot in, forced to play short only to then play long stuff in particular. Few tees were a mess, and the fairways were shaggy. Not upset I played course, got done in 4 hours even with some waits on tees, not a bad course, conditions were average, Just don’t see me coming back.
Great course but too slow
Only made it to hole 14 after ~4.5 hours before my group decided to head home early.
