What’s up with area around greens!
I have always loved this course; however, I was surprised at how awful the area around the greens were! This is supposed to be a high-end course but it looks like a poorly kept municipal course, specially around the greens. I sure hope they are putting in work to improve them. I am at the stage of finding a club for membership and was considering this one; but, now I will entertain others that have reached out to me. Not a good look right now.
Go Elsewhere
Course was so stacked we teed off 20 minutes late and the starter had the audacity to tell us they were on pace for a 4 hour round. We easily hit that before half way through the back 9. Waited on EVERY SINGLE TEE BOX, many of which were chewed up - just bare dirt - they didn't even attempt to fix them. Fairways were also in rough shape. And good luck trying to hit a chip from next to the green with huge clumps of who knows what kind of grass growing sporadically. Greens were slow and appear to have some sort of disease or invasive grass growing in them. It's a real shame this course isn't in prime shape right now given the cooler temps and ample rainfall we've had for this time of year.
Short, Good pace of play
Visited this track on Mother’s Day weekend.. great, fast pace of play. Overall short course with rare fairways that will give you a challenge. Good fairways, bunkers, and greens were true
Absurd Charges and Practices
I have played Birkdale before but on my last visit I was presented with a new fee. I was going to be charged $10.00 to walk their course and their reason was that it is a fee due to pace of play.
If Birkdale was concerned about pace of play they wouldn't stack tee times the way that they do or allow five-somes to play and hold up everyone else on the course. Walkers are not the problem with pace of play at Birkdale and to penalize a walker for their own poor course management is ridiculous.
I encourage other golfers to please take their money elsewhere and play at courses who better understand course management without asinine fees.
I wanted to give Birkdale another shot but this just cemented my previous notions and it is a course best to avoid.
Rock hard greens
Played 18 holes in 5.5 hours today. Course was crowded. Most remarkable thing was no ball marks on any of the 18 holes. None! I can’t remember last time i never saw a ball Mark on bent grass greens. The greens were ridiculously slow. Hard to putt. I did have an enjoyable round with friends.
Great Course to Play in RVA
Really enjoyed the pace or play and friendly staff. Course still needs a few more weeks before all the Bermuda grass comes into bloom, but overall the course is in great shape.
Good value
Greens were punched and sanded which made putting problematic. Clubhouse bar was closed for repairs. Nice layout and good condition besides the greens.
Poor Experience
One thing Birkdale has always done poor is schedule tee times way too close together. We’ve experienced a problem like this last time we played too. We had a 1:04 tee time and didn’t tee off until 1:40 bc of the line of people waiting. Despite this they were still letting walkups play with no tee time! It took our twosome 5.5 hours to play 18 and we were consistently waiting on every hole.
Then when you get on the course they had recently done work in the green and they were incredibly sandy. Way more than normal for a course sanding the greens. It was like putting out of the bunker.
I used to love playing Birkdale but not sure I’ll be back for a while after this experience.
A lot of walking
1st, it's still Winter and yet they are over seeding, a good thing. 2nd, they have been "Fluffing" the Traps some it's not hard pan. If you walk expect 4.5 to 5 mile walk, it a long way from greens to next Tee on all holes. Fantastic Course and I'm glad I live nearby
Great conditions for winter
Only place I could find for a reasonable price of $35
Conditions were fantastic: tee boxes were in good shape, fairways were clean and the greens were consistent
Always a good round
There are a few holes that have some drainage issues so there were some wet spots and few holes were cartpath only, but for winter golf, it is in really good shape. The staff is incredibly friendly and the course is a good track. Worth the price. Worth the time.
Former private now open to the public
This course was in good shape for this time of year. The practice area is great and the staff could not be more friendly. The course has a mix of some hard holes and some that are easy there are par fives that are reachable in two but some fairways are narrow with out of bounds so you have to decide whether to take driver or go with a more controllable club. Greens are firm and fast so landing where you have a uphill putt or chip is needed. There was a drink cart lady with all kinds of beverages both alcoholic and nonalcoholic , on a Thursday that is rare around here. Overall I really enjoyed my round and look forward to playing again.
Good February round
Overall a nice round. Greens rolled super smooth and we in good shape. Fairways were good for February as well. Luckily didn’t end up in any green side bunkers, but they all looked really nice.
One negative was the tee boxes were in really bad shape. Couple times I teed my ball up outside of the markers because there was no good place at all
Not a helpful review at all since all you did was rank it poor across the board because you didn't like the $10 walking fee. You should have given it a zero for value and an honest review of the remaining criteria.
