Needs Time to Get Back in Shape
I had played the course a few years ago and really enjoyed it then but unfortunately it seems to be really struggling now. The layout of the course could be interesting but, and I hate to be so blunt, the fairways, tee boxes, and greens all are in terrible condition. Nearly every green seems to be dying and the tee boxes are some of the worse I have ever seen. With all of the mild temperatures so far and decent rainfall I was shocked by the conditions. Even muni courses I have played recently are in great shape due to the mild June we have had in the region.
Also, regarding the layout, I would hope they would consider providing a course map to players due to all of the blind shots. I was glad I took a cart and had my phone with me because for a couple holes I had to use google maps satellite view or drive the cart halfway down the hole to have any idea of where the green was.
I'll give it a few more years before I drive all the way out to play this course again.
Great value
Virginia oaks is one of the best valued courses in the DC metro area. The course has a great layout with a good mix of reachable par 5s, long par 4s, and a par 3 surrounded by water. The course should hold your attention.
Thanks so much for the awesome review! We appreciate you taking the time to leave your feedback on Golfadvisor. Please come back and play again soon!
Virginia Oaks has terrific potential
I have read previous reviews of this course and talked to friends at the local golf shop about it. Lots of harsh words.
I have played this course twice in the last week (early June 2016). The course is designed by Pete Dye, one of the premier designers. As such it has some blind tee shots and there are plenty of hummocks near the greens to keep you guessing. A second trip around the course makes navigation a bit easier - now if i could only hit the shots I'm imagining! I find the course design to be interesting and demanding of thought. This has a far different feel from the usual courses I've been around.
The agronomy is ok. Tee boxes and fairways are fine. The greens are coming along - i'm hoping that with the growing season well underway they can really get in shape. I spoke to the new GM (he started in May 2016) after my first round . He has brought on a new staff nearly from top to bottom. It strikes me that they are worried about all the right things (the grass, the bunkers, the playing experience). Give this crew a little time and they will soon have a terrific track.
I had lunch at the clubhouse. Among the new hires is Chef Yolanda. The BBQ pork is smoked onsite, the chips are made there as well. All tasty with a number of quality draft beers on tap. The staff was friendly and seem earnest in making this place go. While I was having lunch they were busy setting up for a group of almost 100 folks in the private room. It was all clean and tidy.
I took a look at the practice facilities while i was there. There is a putting green at the clubhouse. There is also a complete facility a block down the street. This includes a driving range that has both mats and grass tees, a putting green, and a chipping/bunker green complex too. These practice areas are a little bit ragged grass wise but i can see that progress is being made and certainly the shots that most of us need to work on can readily be worked on here.
I recommend giving this Pete Dye design a try. I will be going back, trying to shave shots off my round!
Thanks so much for the great review and for highlighting some of our progress! We appreciate it!
Course all dried out
Surprisingly, given all the rain we have had this spring, the course seemed all dried out. Fairways, rough, and greens all were baked so hard that the ball would bounce almost as high as if it had hit the cart path. The greens were very inconsistent, some greens had different patches that were fast and slow. The price was good, but don't expect a good quality golf course.
Thank you for your review. We appreciate your feedback and for bringing these issues to our attention. We've got all hands on deck to get the course back to conditions that we would expect and are anticipating a quick turn around. Please come back and play again soon.
Not ready for prime time...
I hadn't played this course in two years and had read that it was improving under new ownership. Checked in and went to the putting green and was surprised to see how bad of shape it was in. I would think it had been at least a month since it had been aerated, but it looked and putted horribly. With all the rain we have had you would think the green would have recovered by now. Anyway, the course was in similar shape with spotty rough and tee boxes, and the greens hard as rock. On a good note, the staff in the pro shop and the 19th hole were very friendly.
Greens need some work
The greens need some repair but I'm sure all the rain has made it tough...
Tortuously slow
A rainy day so expected low turnout and quick pace. was told a tournament was on but i could still get out at my tee time. my expectation was that the tournament would have started in the morning and pretty much be done. not sure if it was tournament players or others who booked but the pace was tortuously slow. i quit after 9 holes even thought i booked for 18. will be a long time before i return.
Great Staff and Great Course
Course was fantastic as well as the staff being amazing. Pace of play was great and course was really coming around from what it has been. Great layout and challenging course.. Will play again very soon
Someone Cares
Played the course last August and conditions were poor. Spotty rough, bad bunkers, and bumpy greens. Came back today and it looks as though someone finally cares. Rough is much thicker and more consistent. Bunkers are still a little rough, but they had been raked. Greens were healing from aerification but rolled much smoother than my last visit. Speeds were about medium but with the amount of slope in the greens wouldn't want much faster. COMING AROUND
Pleasant surprise
I read some bad reviews regarding course conditions and slow play. I found none of that to be true. There are a few holes that the design dictates slower play, but I found conditions and pace to be just right for this time of year. Short par 3s, a few forced carries, sand was pretty hard. People very friendly. I'll be back soon.
green was really good this time
i played here couple of times and i like it. I will be back for more
Shut it Down
This course needs to be shut down for a year, re-seeded, redesigned...twice. PB Dye needs to wipe his name from this. I walked around for 10 minutes just looking for somebody I could pay to play. I should have just taken a cart and gone; I promise you nobody would have noticed. If this course keeps going the way it is, I will come back in 10 years and there will be holes where you pound your tee into dirt with a hammer and then have to hit your tee shot over a couple of houses to get in the tumbleweed lined fairway. You guys get my point yet?
Meh
Despite the recent poor reviews, I decided to give it a shot because it is a P.B. Dye course. Clearly, his brother Pete is the better designer. The fact that this was designed by a well known course designer blows my mind. An extremely lackluster design, no exciting and interesting holes. Conditions were what I expected for a cheaper course in early December, but the amount of un-fixed ball marks on the green tell you what type of golfers play here. You wind through a housing development, which is noticeable on ever hole. You could spit on the houses from multiples tees and greens. For how many great courses are in the greater DC area, i won't be returning here. Not to mention they sent me out as a single stacked behind multiple 3-somes and 4-somes, with multiple 4-somes and 3-somes behind me. I ended up skipping a total of 4 holes. No marshall in sight. Ugh.
Course in Very Poor Condition
This course is not in good condition at all. It seems to be neglected and very minimal maintenance done. Dry patches on the greens and around the greens. Pace of play very slow on back 9 and no marshalls.
Great Nov. Day
The course has some absolutely beautiful lake-view holes on the back nine. The greens were a little ragged but the course was otherwise in perfect shape.
Course Under Repair
This was quite possibly the most poorly maintained course I have EVER played in the Washington area. Even at the terrific GN price of only $20, I was tempted to request a refund after the first two holes. The tee boxes, fairways and even "light rough" were a total mess (see attached photos).
I understand the toll Washington DC summers can take on a course, but it would seem the grounds crew have just given up. Trees that block the fairways were overgrown, adding to a few already challenging blind tee shots.
It is quite a shame as there are some picturesque (15th green) and fun (par 3, 18th) holes along with a newly renovated clubhouse, good hot dogs and a GREAT beer selection to keep most golfers interested in coming back. However, the course conditions were enough for me to seek better venues to play 18 holes.
Much better than couple years ago
Virginia Oaks is back to shape again. I've played this course often for about 10 years, but not last couple years due to its poor condition. I heard about new ownership and new management, so tried yesterday. It's much better than the last time I played couple years ago although it still can improve some such as tee boxes.
rainy nine holes at va oaks
always have enjoyed the course. this time around I injured my back while playing so took it very easy and played 9 instead of 18. it was a rainy day, on and off again. not many other golfers were out there. course was in pretty good shape. the traps had stones in them so I didn't play out of them but the distances to the green were well marked and the greens were not very chewed up so overall, the course was good condition.
Beautiful Course
Recently, the course is changed to new enviroment for playing. They have lots beatifil views and exciting designes.
Love this course and will recommand to my all loving golf friends.
making good progress on course
