Hunting Hawk Golf Club
About
Situated along the Chickahominy River, Hunting Hawk Golf Club sprawls across a rolling landscape covered with mature trees and dotted with sparkling ponds. The natural wetlands and rugged terrain were carefully preserved. The gentle hills provide contours that are subtle but challenging. The fairways have generous, well-defined landing areas but they are flanked with sand bunkers and sculpted mounding. The undulating greens are also framed with bunkers and grass hollows. Every hole has a unique character that requires a different strategy. Hunting Hawk Golf Club's back nine is slightly tougher than the front nine. It is where most of the water comes into play. The 11th is the best birdie opportunity on the back, it is followed by the challenging 12th, which required a carry over wetlands that many balls have fallen prey to.

solid course that makes you use all the clubs in your bag
Great course for the money. I've played this course at least four times a year and this outing was the best shape i've seen it in.
Slow... and cart paths only.
4/9/13
I saw no reason to have cart paths only golf. This is twice in a row( I played one time last year and yesterday) I've played there taking 5+ hours due to golf path only rule. When I questioned the staff they curtly said that's what the super. wanted. I saw only a few areas that were damp and they could have easily been roped them off. Greens were bumpy; fairways cut very short. Slow play and no marshalls. It's a nice track. Too bad, it used to be better .
great for $20
great course for golfnow.com prices. hope it drys out in the summer, every shot was wet.
This course has an interesting layout for a flat course
Found this course on Golfnow and stopped on our way home from Myrtle Beach. I found the course and it amenities to be very good. A great course comparable to what we played at MB. The course was in great shape for the middle of March. A very interesting layout for a flat course. We will play Hunting Hawk again.
Pretty nice for early Spring.
Cart path only due to amount of rain and snow recently. Course in good condition for early Spring. A few areas, mostly bunkers were still wet although no standing water. A good day for early March.
Average Experience
I have played this course multiple times. And while none of my complaints are deal breakers to prevent me from coming back, I felt they were worth mentioning. Course layout is great and conditions (played in February) were fine for this time of year. However, every time I play here, the place of play is terrible. I think this is due to course management (or lack there of). No starters or marshalls to regulate pace of play, groups teeing off, etc. Teed off about 20 minutes late. Before we teed off, there were about 4 groups waiting/crowding on the first tee. Round also took 5+ hours.
Good Course, kept in shape, friendly staff
Be aware that this course doesn't drain well so if you play within a week of rain it will be wet.
No starter on a Sunday so play was slow and start order was confusing.
Course is a good layout. Several tee box options to allow a challenge for all golf levels.
Great value for a cold windy day!
Snack bar closed due to no one showing up. Driving range closed due to rain the day before. I would have liked to warm up first. Putting green was open but no chipping. Why not have a few mats to prevent tearing up the grass! They did have winter golves which I had never heard of before but was Soooo glad that I bought a pair!! I'll be back on a warmer day, hopefully at a great price!
Good value for course
This course plays really well. It's quite difficult for my skill level so I shot poorly but I enjoyed it thoroughly even in the 100 degree weather. Some of the holes are very challenging and unforgiving. I got the hot deal so I paid 16 dollars for 18 holes and a cart..best deal I've ever gotten for golf.
staff was disappointing
tee-time 942am, my partner got there @ 730 am. front gate was locked, when he was let in he was asked to get off the practice green. . i arrived at 820 am. was told the driving range would not open until 910. it was 41 degrees and it had not frozen the night before. we sat in the clubhouse for 45 minuets. got back at 2 pm asked to play 18 more, staff said they left at 515 and to be back by then. other than that it was good.
This course has wonderful greens and fairways
I have golfed several times at Hunting Hawk and have never been disappointed. It is one of the finer courses in the central Virginia region with staff who are both friendly and professional.
Winter conditions, still playable. Greens in good condition.
Since we were playing on Jan 3, it was a bit wet. This is a nice courese and worth the trip to go play. Great deal on Golf Now. Course does have a lot of sand traps. Nice layout and challenging greens.
Course slope rating 10 pts too high
Course looks good with rye grass in fairways, sand traps completely washed out, greens full of geese droppings and rough
, desk staff unfriendly and short, grill has a language problem..at $16 would play again..at $40 a joke.
Good Layout
I enjoy playing this course mainly because it's a good layout. Fairways and greens are in pretty good shape. Golf now has some good deals here if you can get it under $40 its a great deal. Would recommend over $40 too but you can get cheaper.
Over seeded fairways were nice with the wet conditions and the greens were very good for late December!
The fairways were over-seeded which was nice especially since it was wet. The greens were very good.
My only criticism is minor....many of the tees were set too far up.
Excellent value and the staff is very nice.
It's in the greens
Though mid-December the rye overseed in the fairways made for a beautiful look with green fairways winding through the brown rough. This is a well-designed course, some long and some shorter holes, water on three par fives that create some risk/reward, and overall just a very picturesque links. The staff was great, providing a complimentary yardage card when I said it was my first time there. You can walk if you so desire, which I did, and it's not a huge walk from green to the next tee so I highly recommend walking. The greens - first of all, in fine shape for this time of year and they are the biggest challenge of this course. Fast - we're talking 12 on the stimpmeter fast (but they'll hold a good iron shot) and quite a lot of undulation make them tough to judge. Spend some time on the practice green before you go out. Overall a great course, I'll be back!
Some challenging holes. Great layout.
I love the course layout. Has some challenging holes with a strong challenging finishing hole. Course was in pretty good shape despite the recent rain. It was extremely foggy on the date I played, but our group enjoyed the round.
nice course ,we would have played faster except for the fact we had one player that took too much time looking for lost balls.
staff were super friendly , we really enjoyed playing.
Well maintained, challenging but fair
Good course to play, fast and smooth green, well maintained, challenging but fair.
Good course, but not for everybody.
I went out to Hunting Hawk on the recommendation of a good golfing buddy. My first experience there was pretty good overall. The course is pretty long, and you would think that the length is what makes the course difficult...however, the putter is what will make or break your round here at "the Hawk." There are plenty of tough driving holes where I found myself in the woods, but this is something i'm very used to. The size of the greens and the amount of slope found on them is something I am certainly NOT used to. I remember joking with my buddy on the practice green about this obnoxious mound that is absolutely HUGE and runs through the center of the green, and saying to him, "Man, are there really hills like this on any of the greens out there?" He just smiled and I now know why. This is a course where, if you are not on the right part of the green, you might find yourself standing there with a putt that is more difficult than being off the green with a wedge in your hand. Many multi-tiered greens that will put pressure on your approach shots and a few three putts out there just waiting... The condition of the greens left something to be desired too. There were ball marks all over every green, but they weren't a huge deal. The greens were faster than I am used to, even though it was somewhat wet the day I played. The fairways are great, the rough is thick but fluffy and you can sometimes get really lucky with your lie. Overall, the greens were the one drawback to me...other's might love the added challenge. Also, there are TONS of bunkers on this course so make sure your sand-game is up to snuff! The sand was pretty easy to play out of, despite the moist conditions and sheer depth of some of them. If you golf in the Richmond area, you should definitely check out the course for yourself. Using golfnow.com makes it super affordable so there is no excuse! Now that you know my opinion, go form your own!!
