Fun course
Confusing but fun course. Must play a second time after getting a feel for it the first time
A Fun and Challenging Course.
With all the rain we have had, I thought the fairways were in good condition. The Greens were also in very good condition. It's has some real pretty holes down by the tracks. It's a very challenging course which I like . Putting is the key to this course.
Great condition.
Course has improved a lot. Practice facilities are excellent. Golf course is difficult but interesting. You have to think. If you cannot hit your driver straight , leave it home or bring a lot of balls. Beside that I will play the course again.
Tough, fun course. Needs some TLC.
The reviews are true -- this is a challenging track, even from the white tees. But it's not impossible to score well if you can hit fairways and make putts. It's hilly and there are a fair share of blind shots -- but nothing you can't figure out if you walk up the fairways to take a peek.
It's a refreshing change of pace -- different from a lot of the courses around the area. Tighter, hillier, and more accuracy-focused than distance-focused.
The course needs some work but not a ton. The tee boxes need some love and management could make some other infrastructure investments to make the place shine.
I'd play it again.
A nice change from the flat, open courses around town.
The course played very slow on Saturday. A Friend and I were paired with some first timers which kept us pretty slow, but we were able to keep up with the group in front of us for most of the day. When we did get behind, we had a friendly Marshall tag along to help find lost balls quicker. He also helped find about 20-30 other balls which he gladly gave us. The staff is extremely friendly and same goes for the players too.
Most importantly the course. A challenging course with many elevation changes and blind shots. Put your driver away, you wont need it here (seriously, you will have a much better score without it). Challenging pin placements on better then average greens made for a few 3 putts for the day... Slope plays a big factor on these greens. Most fairways are narrow. The fairways are in fair shape, I would consider them average for the area and price. The under brush was still pretty clear from the winter, but give it another couple of weeks and good luck finding anything under the trees. Rough is very manageable, same height as some municipal fairways.
I'd recommend this course to anyone with a handicap of 20 or better looking for a course to test your skills and club selection.
Not bad at all
Course is very tight and the elevation changes drastically not from hole to hole but from shot to shot. Number 12 was not open would have liked to have known that before we hit into it but not a big deal. Staff was very nice and knowledgeable. Gave us a great send off before one with tips for each of the difficult holes. Golf now app for 45 bucks and a cart on an early Sunday morning. Not bad at all.
Not recommended for a first time course
I brought friends in from out of town. Got a fair price for a weekend place to play. Staff was friendly. Unfortunately they didn't give you enough of a breakdown on the course. It seemed that every hole had a blind first or second shot. If you are playing for the first time there isn't enough information on the card for you to choose the right club. Some great holes on the course. Need a accurate yardage book. Also need the marshall to space out the pairs or hold back a foursome to allow a twosome to go in front. We were drove into several times due to the layout of the course and the lack of proper spacing.
Great course, great value
We played the tips and it was pretty challenging. Great, undulating greens. The course is a little narrow but has some great holes. #16 lives up to its title of most challenging hole in VA. Will definitely play again!
Great challenging course for the $$$
Played this course for the first time with a friend. There are a lot of blind shots and elevation changes which make this course challenging playing from the tips. Course knowledge is a must and club selection is key to scoring well here. After 4 days of non-stop rain, the fairways were a little "bushy" and need to be mowed down. The greens were also slow (which was to be expected after getting so much rain) and needed to be rolled. I would like to play this course again when the staff has a chance to work on the course to bring it up. Our round took 4hrs 51mins to complete with "cart path only" rules in place. Will surely play again...especially at $35 :-)
Great course.
First time playing this course and was impressed with the quality and care taken throught the 18 holes.
Frustrating
This is a very hilly course with a lot of blind spots and dog-leg holes. Definitely take a look over hills to get a sense of where to land your next shot. Fairways are somewhat narrow, and several of the greens are small and hard, making it difficult to land on without your ball rolling off of them. Bring lots of golf balls, especially if it's your first time playing this course as it's inevitable you'll lose 1 or 2, even if you're a seasoned player. The pro shop does have a tip sheet with which they can provide you. Nevertheless, it got too frustrating for me that it took the fun out of the day. In the 20+ years I've been playing (10 years, competitively), I have never been so exasperated by an entire course. The only plus was that the course wasn't crowded at all.
Don't Bother
Course conditions were simply appalling.
Most fairways lacked even a modest amount of grass.
Tees Boxes where chewed up and hard as concrete.
Greens we early fall thatched and dressed in sand.
On a good note, the traps had pretty white sand (a rarity in the NOVA region), to bad I never found a trap.
Even with Advantage Card, $ would be to high at 1/4 the normal discounted rate.
Won't be coming back to this course.
The course layout is very challenging but the condition of the course is poor
I have always enjoyed the courses that have a similar layout as that of the General. Meaning I do not mind elevation changes, blind shots or doglegs and this course has all that. However, it is almost impossible to find a flat lie anywhere on the course. You could hit the perfect drive and it would stll roll off the fairway.
The tee boxes and fairways were in poor shape and need quite a bit of attention. The greens were in fine shape, seemed well kept and rolled true.
We played on a Sunday and you would think they would have had a food/drink cart out but did not. Not to mention the snack bar was dark. The person running the pro shop had to come over and help us. Not to mention we then had to take our food back to the pro shop to pay. They seem to be running this course on a shoe string budget.
the course has great portential but needs some TLC and attention to the fairways.
Bring a lot of balls
Played at 630 in the morning on a Sunday...course let out a foursome then a twosome then my twosome (didn't ask us to hook up) then a singlet then another twosome..poor management of tee times...the course was extremely difficult if you missed the fairway...9 out of 10 it was a lost ball...elevation changes to the extreme...keep the driver in the bag pretty much all day...started on the blues and was too difficult for 13 handicap...after 9 played the whites...which they call Men's (shows how hard it is). It is very short at 5600ish but very demanding...undulating greens and blind shots...17 my partner took a 6 putt because it was cut on a hill that rolled it back down to him each time he missed short or long of the hole...just like Payne Stewart...overall the difficult test is sometimes what you need to humble you...it's a quirky course but we did have a great laugh at the same time with the goofy holes...
challenging course, hilly, narrow fairways, make your shot count.
The course is beautiful and challenging. Good value for the money.
I am writing this as a 69 year-old man. When I played, it was cart-paths only. Too difficult getting up and down hills to cart and back.
A lovely challenging course with great vistas. Built on a hilly terrain. Each hole had its own set of barriers. Very narrow fairways contributed to the difficu;lt, and the undulating greens remied me of Augusta.
Course is for the young low-handicap player. For a 69-year old such as myself in average physical condition, I found it too difficult when confined to cart-paths only and stopped after 9 holes.
Blind Shots
We went early (before 7am) and the course regulars were ahead of us. We checked in with the Starter, who was super nice, and specifically gave instructions about the course. HEED THE HINTS on the cart!, if it's your first time to enjoy the course. Par 5s are short, but you have to play smartly because you can't see the fairway or the green in many cases. Some of the dog legs are 90 degrees and with the trees you can't see much further than what's presented in front of you. The suggested distance is mostly correct. We enjoyed the day and witnessed the group ahead of celebrating a hole in one on 17!
I gave 3* because while we enjoyed it, there were too many unknowns. The fairway and greens are well maintained, but the teebteeboxes need much attention. We will not make a repeat outting.
interesting layout
Fairways are tight. Elevation changes require precise distance control on approach shots. Extreme slope on most greens. From the tips, you must work the ball both ways. The General will expose a good golfer's flaws.
challenging course
good course, was in good shape even with greens wet, they were still fast. slopes in fairway can sometime help, with ball roll, if you miss the fairway the ball can roll off into the woods or high grass because of the slopes.
challanging
I'm slightly prejudice due to the fact I was associated with this course until 7 yrs ago when I moved away. It is a course you MUST play at least 3 times to appreciate the beauty of it. Even though I have played this course over 100 times, the 7 year absense led me to a day of struggling with my game. Was I upset by this ? No Way; this is a golf course you learn to respect and appreciate its challange.
