Destination: Virginia
Located within hours of half the population of the America, Virginia offers a mild climate and year-round golf season in some parts. The landscape can be stunning. Nobody does autumn color changes better than Virginia, and there's something for everyone here, including, of course, lovers.
This is the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents, a state that staged some of the most significant battlegrounds in U.S. history, and many of the golf courses are built around those historic locations. Courses such as Canon Ridge Golf Club, General's Ridge or Stonewall Park Northern Virginia or the fabulous Kingsmill Resort and Golden Horseshoe in historic Williamsburg will not only satisfy your itch for great golf, but set you up for some great site-seeing tours as well.
On the coast, you'll find the family-friendly destination of Virginia Beach, located just south of the Chesapeake Bay, setting up scenic water views for some of the state's most striking courses. Here you'll find golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, as well as Pete Dye, Gene Bates, George Cobb and Rees Jones, all within 45 minutes of each other.
In the mountains, you'll get a totally different golf experience. The Homestead, in Hot Springs, for example, features the legendary Cascades Course -- designed in 1923 by William S. Flynn -- where Virginian Sam Snead honed his game.
The capital of Virginia is Richmond, once a center for tobaccos warehouses, but now a place where outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking, biking and kayaking around and in the St. James River. The city also has a fair number of great eateries and a pretty diverse golf scene, including some historic courses such as Belmont Golf Course, an A.W. Tillinghast/Donald Ross design that hosted the 1949 PGA Championship won by Snead.

Located in a park-rich region of Northern Virginia, General's Ridge is a relatively short public course, where long drives are less effective than accurate placement. There's dog legs, blind holes, hills and ravines aplenty - but it's the slick stiff grass on the greens that will have you struggling to make par.

The words "playable by all levels" or "generous fairways" usually don't come to mind when describing a Pete Dye golf course. But those are descriptions you can believe when it comes to Virginia Beach National. This former TPC course has some typical Dye features, but lacks the sharp edge found on many of his courses.

Stonewall Golf Club in Gainesville, Va. may be public, but it lives like a private club from the well-manicured course to the 13,000-square-foot clubhouse with its coffered ceilings and massive stone fireplace. Set against a backdrop of the Bull Run Mountains and Lake Manassas, this scenic Tom Jackson design is blessed by gently rolling hills and plenty of tall trees.

A challenging course, Cannon Ridge Golf Club is also a four-hour history lesson. This Deane Beman/Bobby Weed-designed, 7,100-yard par 71 not only provides plenty of interesting golf holes but several metal placards throughout the course that tell stories of battles and maneuvers that occurred during the Battle of Fredericksburg here in 1862.

You can still see cannons on the ridge at Cannon Ridge Golf Club, but now the battles are a little safer as golfers try to defeat this layout. Opened in 2003, it is a 7,100-yard par 71. Today's battles are waged with drivers and putters on L-93 bentgrass, which covers the greens, tee boxes and fairways, and tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass in the roughs.

Billed as "the public's country club," the beauty of the land at Augustine Golf Club, near Washington, D.C., is unmistakable, and course designer Rick Jacobson made good use of it.
