This city carries a well-deserved reputation for grittiness. It's the town of choice for East Coast inner city crime dramas, from "Homicide" to HBO's "The Wire." Carmelo Anthony, the NBA marketing machine's second-year star, is one of the many who can tell you it's no Hollywood mumbo jumbo either.

Some folks think it doesn't get much better than spending a long weekend at a golf resort, but spending a long weekend at a golf/spa resort ratchets up the decadence several notches. Golf in the morning, a steam and rubdown before heading out for an afternoon round.

The best tournament you'll ever want to see might not include Tiger, Phil or Sergio, but some every day duffers named Michael, Charles and Mario. Many of the top draws will struggle to break 90, hit a single fairway or roll one in from more than four measly feet.

It is Sneed rather than Snead that this southwest Virginia city can claim as one of its own who reached golf's highest echelons as a player.

When summer fades, it's time to shake the beach sand from your shoes and head west. The mountains have been beckoning all summer, promising lower temperatures and humidity, and a more lush green than you'll find in the sun-baked lowlands. Now there's an even greater enticement -- the mountain courses are dressed for fall, nature's last colorful dance before the quiet sleep of winter. There will be days when you'll chase a hint of frost off the first tee, but you'll have your jacket off turning No. 9 as the day warms to the mid-60s. The air's crisp, clear and in some places thin enough that you'll gain 10 yards or so on your drives.

“The Eden of the United States” was how Thomas Jefferson described Charlottesville, a city set in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia. It was here that the master architect built his mountaintop plantation, Monticello, and designed the University of Virginia’s famous Rotunda. Since Jefferson’s time, there have been architects of a different sort at work, carefully etching tees, fairways and greens into these magnificent hills so that it’s a bit of paradise for golfers, too.

In the course of writing about mid-Atlantic golf over the past two years, I've often sought to look backwards-telling the stories of our numerous quality golf facilities, while also mixing in some of the region's rich history along the way. Rare is the time when there's been an opportunity to look forward-and here's such a chance!

I think it's safe to say people are sick of awards. Not getting 'em, of course, but seeing awards-ceremonies on TV. Essentially, such shows feature a collection of largely over-exposed stars, wearing all the latest outlandish fashions--gathered together to celebrate themselves. Talk about narcissism, this is idolatry at its highest. No wonder the tabloids swarm over them like sharks at a feeding frenzy.

Standing on the first tee of most golf courses, you can't help but admire what you see. It might be a boldly shaped seaside landscape reminiscent of the old country; or a tightly contoured parkland fairway bordered by yawning sand bunkers and hardwood trees; or a dramatic elevation drop from a red rock cliff to the desert floor below.
