Virginia Team Seeks To Extend Win Streak at Virginia-West Virginia Matches

Virginia selects team for the matches, set for The Homesteads Cascades Course, April 27-28
MIDLOTHIAN, VA (April 10, 2002) -- The Virginia team will look to continue its eight-match winning streak at the 19th Virginia-West Virginia Matches at the 6,610-yard, par 70 The Homesteads Cascades Course on Saturday-Sunday, April 27-28.
Comprising this years Virginia regulars are 2001 VSGA Co-Golfers of the Year Keith Decker (Martinsville) and Brian Quackenbush (Fairfax). In addition, 2001 VSGA Amateur Championship winner Ross McIntosh (Lorton) as well as State Am finalist Kevin Dillard (Fairfax) are slated to participate. McIntosh and Dillard along with Virginia-West Virginia seniors team member Jamie Gough (Fairfax) fueled the Northeast team to victory at the season-opening VSGA Regional Team Matches earlier this year. Completing the regulars are 2000 VSGA Amateur Championship winner David Passerell (Scottsville) as well as Alllen Barber (Yorktown), Charles Green III (Bluefield) and David Partridge (Manakin-Sabot). In addition to Gough, Richmonder Stan Fischer, Dave King (Sterling) and Jim Kite (Wolftown) make up the seniors team.
Barber, Decker, Partridge, Passerell and Quackenbush were each among the top eight point-earners in the 2001 VSGA player rankings, as were all four senior players in the senior rankings.
The championship format features foursome, four-ball and singles matches. In last years matches, contested at The Greenbriers Old White, Meadows and The Greenbrier courses, the Virginia team notched a 40-32 victory. In addition to posting eight consecutive victories in the competition, the Virginia teams have claimed nine of eleven matches since the competition resumed in 1991. Virginia won six of seven from 1949-55, prior to the temporary suspension of the matches (1956-90).
A non-profit organization founded in 1904, the VSGA has grown from six clubs since its inception to more than 290 today. In addition, the VSGAs membership numbers more than 85,000. The VSGA promotes and conserves the best interests of the game as embodied in its honorable traditions through its tournaments, handicap program, course rating system, VIP and scholarship program, rules education as well as many other services.
