COURSE REVIEW
Bulle Rock has no easy birdies but Dye golf course still a blastMany LPGA and PGA Tour-host golf courses are all hype. Not so at Pete Dye's Bulle Rock in Havre de Grace. /Bulle Rock gets a lot of publicity for being the host of the LPGA Championship. That can obscure the fact this is a great course, maybe the single best Maryland golf course, one that can more than stand on its own merits. It doesn't matter if you barely know who Michelle Wie is, let alone Na On Min. You'll love Bulle Rock all the same. |

FEATURE STORY
Rocky Gap Lodge & Resort offers great golf in Maryland mountainsJust a two-hour drive from Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Pittsburgh, sits a golf retreat seemingly another world away from the big city hubbub: Rocky Gap Lodge & Resort. The centerpiece of Maryland's Rocky Gap State Park, the golf resort features its very own on site Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. Nicklaus had to use a lot of dynamite to create Rocky Gap. The result is a golf course that's dramatic around many turns. |

The Planet Putter The spoils of Thai golfIf ever there existed a golfing spot worthy of travel to the other side of the world, it's Thailand, which has emerged as the darling of Southeast Asian golf tourism. Full story | Also: Packing for ThailandFEATURE STORIES Airports in Washington D.C. area offer many nearby golf coursesNo matter if you're passing through Washington D.C., coming for a visit or here to lobby for the pharmaceutical industry, if you have enough of a layover, there are some nice golf options. Not far from either Dulles or Ronald Reagan National, you’ll find Congressional Country Club, the TPC at Avenel, Bull Run Country Club, Raspberry Falls Golf and Hunt Club, Westfields, East Potomac Park, Washington Golf and Country Club, and Army-Navy Country Club and more. An 18-point golfer's guide: Richmond off courseAs a key player in the Civil War, Richmond, Va. is known for many things. It's the city where Patrick Henry delivered his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech. Perhaps more interesting to many travelers, it also happens to be a great town for restaurants. So while Virginia's capital has plenty of golf options nearby, it also has plenty of other diversions for families, singles and everyone in between. Tiny Delaware boasts golf worth more than a simple drive throughDelaware has a reputation of being a state you pass through while going to another northeastern destination. But while Delaware may be the second smallest state in land mass, there's little doubt it is the most overlooked one in golf terms. With courses like Three Little Bakers Country Club and White Clay Creek Country Club, the golf may be a little off the beaten path in Delaware, but it's there, waiting for you to stop. COURSE REVIEWS Richmond's Belmont Golf Course: From major host to dirt-cheap muniImagine paying $18 to play a golf course that once hosted a major championship. Ludicrous, right? Wrong. You'll pay just that at Belmont Golf Course in Richmond, Virginia. Host of the 1949 PGA Championship, won by Sam Snead, Belmont can now be played for less than a meal at your average Chilli's. And playing Belmont is an experience. It's an education in just how much the game has changed, especially at the pro level. Mid-Atlantic golfers can play cheap with the Victory PassAttention mid-Atlantic golfers: The Victory Golf Pass is definitely a win-win proposition. The pass lets you play for drastically reduced rates at 141 tracks, 14 of them private, in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Virginia. All are within "comfortable driving distance" of the Philadelphia metro area, according to the pass Web site. The pass costs $49.95, with discounts for multiple purchases and aportion of the proceeds go to charities like the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Twin Lakes in Va.'s a decent play, could use some polishRobert Fajkowski is a 5-handicap from Fairfax, Va., writes: The Lakes Course at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton, Va., has the layout, but it doesn't have the polish. Fairways are average; the rough is forgiving; the greens are receptive to good shots but agonzingly slow. If you play the course in the morning, be sure your putter has an X-Shaft. Still, the price is right and the course is playable. Just remember to give your putts a little extra. Arthur Hills releases his golf demons at White Clay CreekNoted course designer Arthur Hills obviously had some demons to let out when he designed the golf course at White Clay Creek Country Club. Forced carries on nearly every hole and raised-ridge greens are just two things that have golfers walking off the course shaking their heads. But if you can handle the toughness, White Clay Creek can be an interesting play. If you can’t handle it, there’s always the horse race track next door. |
