With more than 12,000 rooms, hotels are aplenty in Virginia Beach
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach has more than 12,000 hotel rooms (and that's not including camping grounds and seasonal rental units), and that number continues to grow.
With 310-square miles of sand, nearly every one of them has some sort of ocean or bay view. And more hotels are popping up. Work on the $42 million Hilton Resort and Conference Center at 31st Street began in August after six years of public opposition, land disputes and false starts. The 22-story, 300-room hotel is aiming for four-star status with concierge service, three restaurants, a health club and a rooftop pool.
In addition, the city broke ground in 2003 on a new convention center. It is the single largest public project ever and the $202.5 million center will replace the Pavilion. That will attract more tourists, and more hotels. When finished in 2007, the building will be more than 500,000-square feet - nearly triple the size of the current Pavilion.
Add in the fact that Nauticus is preparing for more than 114,000 cruise line passengers in 2004, more than three times the number from 2002, and there's really not that many empty rooms as you might think.
