Hell's Point Golf Club
About
When Hell's Point Golf Club opened in 1982, Golf Digest called it one of the best new courses and it was ranked as one of the 100 best-designed courses in the country. Renowned architect Rees Jones designed the course. He incorporated the many natural features provided by the golf course's location in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The fairways are edged with saltwater marshes and Jones included his signature sculpted bunkers along the greensides. Just a stone's throw from the ocean, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The second hole is one of southeastern Virginia's toughest golf holes with out-of-bounds to the left, trees to the right, and a sloped fairway that leads to a well guarded, double-tiered green. This par 4 is the no. 1 handicap hole at When Hell's Point Golf Club.

In need of alot
I used to play here back in the late 80's when the course wasn't that old. It was considered to be one of the, if not THE premier course in Virginia Beach then. I started playing there again this year but unless there are some big improvements to the course, I may have played my last round there. It hadn't rained in days yet it was cart paths only. You had to find just the right spot to park your cart or you would step out into mud or a massive puddle. Walking to the middle of the fairway there was always a chance you would encounter an area of standing water or very soft earth. Even the cart paths are in terrible shape. For now, I'm playing elsewhere.
New management is going to ruin the course
New GM is terrible. The negative energy in that place is heavy. All the employees look like they want to quit and the GM just walks around and talks down to people, both staff and customers. Course is dry yet still cart path only. Was my favorite course.
Good Layout, but not good condition
Course has seen better days. Challenging layout, but is overshadowed by conditions. Path horrible, greens average, traps had very little sand. Was wet the day we played and cart path only as it should have been. Pro shop and cart staff were friendly. Played on the VSGA book.
Mysterious Golf Cart Policy
Barring the course's mysterious golf cart policy, I could have had a much more pleasant experience.
The cart policy is that all customers must load their golf bag into their my golf carts in front of the golf cart staff.
Following the incomprehensible policy, I loaded my golf bag into my cart while the golf cart staff was casting apparently suspicious eyes on me and my golf bag.
When I asked him why, the cart staff (an old guy at least in his 70s) curtly said, "It is a new policy".
I just wonder how many of the course customers may appreciate the mysterious cart policy.
Staff Rules
After I paid they would not give me my key to the golf cart until I brought my clubs from the car. This was totally ridicules. Mt friend and I will never play there again.
Poor management
No player is allowed to take cart to his car for clubs … no key was issued unless it was 15 mins to tee off… my last time … used to play here for years until this new rule change.. im 73 my bag is heavy … not able to carry bag t from my car.. I’m out
New rules regarding carts and new staff makes Not worth playing.
Not worth the hassle or money.
#1. New rules regarding carts where you can’t have a cart before 15 minutes to tee time AND can’t take cart to car to pick up bags is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of.
#2. They would not allow use of handicap flag. It was cart path only, but was dry enough for driving on. #3. Course is never in good condition, today was the worst condition ever.
Been playing this game for almost 50 years and have never encountered such rude management. The Cart guys were the only nice employees there.
Thank goodness we didn’t invest in the membership.
moles ran the place
Played this course in 80s when new if was the best course in VB great condition and top 100 new courses now it is like playing a forgotten City course with mole holes and runs all over the place greens ok but fairways where wet and patchy at best mostly POA what a shame
Caddyshack time
Call Bill Murray to come and get rid of all the gopher mounds and tunnels all over the course. Yowza! Other than that a beautiful layout and I can imagine it looks amazing during the Spring and Summer. Staff was very friendly!!! Ps... Eagled the first hole!
Challenging course
The weather condition just Difficulty of the course. I like the challenge though. Will play again
Slippery When Wet
Course is in great shape for winter golf, also in great shape for big snorkeling. I love the course, it’s one of the most stunning to play in Hampton Roads but it really was holding a lot of water when I visited.
Still for mid-January golf the pace was fair, the challenge was there and a fun time was had. It’s no wonder this is one of my favorite courses in the area.
Showing improvement
This was my second time playing the course since June 2022. The greens and bunkers were in better shape. Still plenty of room for improvement but what has been done since I last played is encouraging. The layout is nice. Lots of different shots required. I’ll play again at some point. Hopefully the improvements continue.
