Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Great course but pace management
I’m about 5 holes in and the course is beautiful with a great layout. As for pace, it is horrific. I’m playing a morning round that is on pace to be 6plus hours long since the groups in front of me are playing an inefficient scramble. I think they should book scramble tournaments closer to 2pm when pace is a little bit more lax. Without staff enforcement of pace, this course is not worth the price tag. However, staff are friendly and helpful.
Good public course great staff.
There's a lot to say here. First of all, the staff couldn't have been nicer. Everyone was very friendly and engaged well with the players. We went to the practice facility and that was pretty disappointing. You're hitting off old mats with beat up balls and if you want to hit driver you have to hit into a net. Still it allowed me to warm up but I wouldn't want to work on swing changes there. It was $5 for a bag of balls. The starter was extremely nice and very personable. We got started on time and the course was in pretty good shape. The sand traps were nothing to write home about but I was only in one all day. I was able to hit a pretty normal shot out of it, but my playing partners were having fits getting out of the sand traps. From what I could see, there was not a lot of sand in most traps. Greens were in good shape and rolled probably 10 or so on the stamp meter. So reasonably fast but not intimidating. The fairways were in okay shape. The tee boxes weren't in particularly good shape, but hey you're teeing it up anyway. The carts do not have a GPS system so you have to bring your own or a laser. The pace of play was actually pretty good. It wasn't fast, but it wasn't particularly slow to the point where you're going. Crazy waiting. Four and a half hour round. The old hickory grill room served very good food after the round and they have a nice place to sit covered outside. Incidentally, they have water igloos on the course as well as a cart girl with beverages and snacks. She was extremely friendly and we saw her about four times. There was another young lady who met us at the 18th Green and begin cleaning the clubs. She was also very sweet and very engaging. Overall a nice day on a decent course with excellent staff.
Just add some sand
Would be really nice to put sand in the sand traps out of the four traps I was in for the day only 1 had sand the other la were mud or hardpacked dirt.
Best kept greens in the region
Greens have a lot of movement and breaks, but the roll was true. Very well kept Kudos to the course super and grounds crew..
Always a pleasure
What can I say. The day was beautiful and the course played really well. The front nine could use some sand in the traps, but really happy with the course. The pace is okay sped up on the back nine after we got to play through the foursome in front of us.
Not as bad as it was
The course was actually in good condition except for a few tee boxes and the bunkers. The bunker may as well have white lines around them and considered “ground under repair”, they are that bad. But the fairways and greens were solid. We had a deal price so it was a positive experience!
Great Layout
I really like Old Hickory. The layout is great. It’s a big Course although the tee boxes all seemed to be moved forward. The greens were in excellent condition. Fairways and tees were also great. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that they changed cart rules from 90 deg to cart path only just as we were teeing off at 2 pm. When we asked why the starter said “humidity”. It was a nice 75 deg sunny day!
Nice, but Some Issues.
It is a bit overpriced and there are four par-four holes that are always cart path only, for no apparent reason. I can see making them cart path only under wet conditions, but the ground was not wet when I played.
I believe this restriction is unnecessary.
Beautiful day of golf
Enjoyed the day on the course with a 3.5 hour round. The course was in great shape and we had perfect weather. I also had the opportunity to interact with the GM on the course Troy and had a good conversation with and he couldnt have been more engaging. We then had some lunch, beers, and a cigar after the round on the patio to wrap up the day. Thank you.
Don’t stop now
A continuation of improvement is still underway. Put this course in supreme condition and it would be very hard to beat. Keep up the good work.
Don't get much for the value
This used to be a really nice course, but it's in terrible condition now but the price has not changed to reflect that. We had issues with our cart on the 2nd hole. We flagged a marshal down and asked if they could send a new one out to us. He told us to walk back to the clubhouse and get it ourselves. Overall not a great experience.
Nice to be back.
Staff is always friendly, positive and helpful. Pace of play was excellent as we finished in @ 3.5 hours. Greens were aerated but cut and playable without affecting your putt. Tee boxes and fairways were fine but a bit more sand in the traps would soften them up a bit. For the first time out this season, it was an enjoyable experience as it seems like this course is coming back to life. Definitely recommend playing Old Hickory.
