Bull Run Golf Club
About
Situated in the foothills of Bull Run Mountain, Bull Run Golf Club has a beautiful woodland setting that is conveniently located just minutes from many historic Civil War sites. The course plays through mature forests and across lush, grassy meadows. There are also several ponds that come into play throughout. The expansive layout covers over 450 acres, allowing plenty of room for the native flora and fauna. The risk-reward layout has plenty of challenges for more daring hitters but it also offers wide fairways that are molded to steer the ball towards the center. The landing areas are generous but they are often framed by grassy hollows, bunkers, or mature trees. Bull Run is challenging, but playable, which is why the club is considered one of the best golf courses in the D.C. area.

Course conditions need some help
Course has a great layout and practice area. Biggest issues are poor tee boxes and several bad patches on the fairway. Bunkers were hard pan with lots of rocks in there, not sand. Some repair on the cart paths needed as well. Nice course for $55. Not $80.
Good course, bad info
No indication that greens were recently aerated and no discount on round
Gravel Bunkers???
I enjoy this course every time I had played it. Its fairly wide so I feel that its very playable...except when it comes to its bunkers. For some reason all of the bunkers have a hard packed bed of gravel that is beautifully disguised under perfect white powder sand. Forget about playing out of the bunkers here. The bunkers reject your club because of the hidden bed of rock under the sand. Is this some superintendent gag or technique that I'm unaware of? Very surprised and appalled by this. Other than that...I love this course. Great clubhouse, range, putting greens, and course layout.
BULL RUN WINTER
It was 40 when we started and rose to 50 for back 9. The course was in great shape for March except greens which were in real good shape but slow. The bar is awesome, full bar, hot dogs and other snacks at the turn. Cart girl came around several times.. big plus!! I only gave 3 stars for off course amenities because guess what? The pro shop had NO ball markers.. I mean none, not even the stupid big poker chips kind.
$105 is a bit pricey but will definitely go back next time in Manassas. I think all of the courses in the area are around $80 to $90 anyway. Oh yeah, call pro shop for rates before using golf now - 5 to 10 cheaper. Golf Now is going down hill in my opinion.
Winter expectations should be light
Many tee boxes are real beat up. We play at a public course in area which has nicer greens and fairways and drains better. Views are beautiful and I do like the layouts but their prices for quality of course has substantially increased.
Greens are immaculate
Ive played this course twice (November and January) and while I obviously only seen the course during the off-season, I must say I've come away impressed both times. Fairways and rough are good considering the winter months but the greens are in excellent condition. Ball rolled true and it was actually rare to find a blemish or pitch mark. The layout isn't anything special but Its good and the 18th is a reachable par 5 if you hit it good off the tee. I will absolutely be back when it warms up a bit
Bull Run
if memory serves, this course had some trauma in the early 2000's with cicada killers swarming the course and destroying greens. they have come back from that devastation and it's pretty much back to its former glory. there are houses at the course now, but that really doesn't detract from the experience at all.
Good Layout, Slow Green Speed
This course has pretty good course layout - each hole has different style and the view is good especially around this time of the year.
The down side is green is very slow. Not many divots but the grass is not cut shortly enough to make a good roll on the green.
Also, the course management staffs did not care players. They were blowing out the fallen leaves, which is necessary, but kept blowing them too close to us whenever we were on the tee boxes, fairways, or greens. It is very annoying to hear the sound of the blower right next to me when I’m trying to putt or swing.
Challenging course but some staff members are too rigid
Fair experience overall. If you are a beginner or an intermediate player, you may annoy other players if you do not keep up with the pace. Specially when you must use cart path all then time due to amount of rain in last week. This is a failure in adjusting tee-times to compensate for the use of cart paths vs. the size of the course.
It is a challenging and fun course to play. Staff at the club house was very picky. A gentleman when I was checking in almost did not allow me to play since I was not wearing a polo shirt. I was wearing long golf pants and a special UPF 50+ long sleeve shirt without a collar. I was not aware of have to have collar policy. It was uncomfortable but I was able to play. Need flexibility and do not pick on players that require a UPF attire for medical reasons. Also, wearing double shirts in a sunny day will be quite uncomfortable. Also, I saw many ladies that do not have polo shirts and have athletic blouses. Be consistent and use common sense before making players uncomfortable.
Since only cart paths were available due to the amount of rain in the last week, adjust tee-times accordingly due to the size of the course. Balance pace with size. Use metrics or sensors for that.
Added to my top five local courses
I really enjoyed the course. It wasn't terribly difficult, yet it wasn't overly easy either. The course made sense. The greens were and good condition that will bit slow. Pin placement was quite fair. Fairways and greens are trapped in nicely for a reasonable challenge, with ample landing zones, good for bogie golfers.
I love the practice area! The chipping green is fantastic and I got some great practice there. The putting green and driving range are nothing special, but had some conveniences that I appreciate. The driving range had Matt's or grass and very accurate markers.
The staff was friendly. The location is great. I wish the price was a bit lower, but considering the cost of some similar courses around here, I'll take it. I'll definitely be coming back.
