challenging but fair course
Although not as long as some courses in the area, holes are challenging requiring accuracy with driver and irons. Course in very good shape.
Not a course for duffers
With too many carries over junk, tight fairways, water hazards, and bizarre holes (one dogleg is really a horse-shoe!), this course is very difficult for duffers. The fairways and greens are in good conditions, but the rough is too high given how narrow are the fairways. And there are too many blind drives & second shots. There's an adequate putting green, but there's only a close net instead of a driving range. People are great, but I'd never recommend it or go back.
Shot makers course!
Played Ospreys on a steamy day. Arrived an hour early for our tee time and the starter was able to get our group out early even though the course was pretty booked up. No driving range, but there is a hitting bay with a few bags of balls. Starter named Jim was amazingly friendly and even offered us the use of his bug spray (the black flies were absolutely horrible on every hole). Tee boxes and greens were in good shape. Fairways were nice, but had lots of divots and the occasional clover patch. This course is filled with blind shots and forced carries. It is generally pretty narrow and I only hit driver 3 times in 18 holes. Definitely need to read the hole notes provided in the cart. At times my group felt that good shots were punished due to crazy doglegs and really high rough. I lost a ball that landed just a few feet off of the fairway. Over all the course is a great bargain! The back 9 winds along the river and is quite scenic. There is quite a bit of construction on the course. On the back 9 there is a condo building being built right off of the tee box, and the 17th holes is completely being redone. It is now a par 5 that has been made into a par 3 temporarily. Club house is beautiful and a great place for a drink after the round. My group would definitely come back. Especially considered the golf now $30 greens fee!
Quirky but Enjoyable
Make no mistake, this is a retiree's golf course and totally a situation where they tried to stuff 10 pounds of marbles into a 5 pound bag!! :) The course is all over the place and some of the holes are a little silly. I didn't count, but there are at least 8 holes where you only hit 180-220 off the tee for a "drive." So it's totally a shot-maker's course. You live and die by the little suggestions card provided in the cart if you are a first timer. A few challenging "normal" length holes, but overall not really well balanced. Course condition was good and the greens ran at a pretty good pace and seemed to be smooth. I have no complaints other than the shortness of the majority of the par 4's and a few of the par 3's (like 100 yards or less). It was totally worth the money though for the experience, but I don't see myself returning.
Flies!
Course was in great. Very friendly staff. Great price. However, our group was being ATTACKED the entire time by horse flies! The starter, whom was very friendly, warned us about it and gave us some repellent. I understand there's not a whole lot they can do to remedy the problem but my goodness, it was miserable.
A gem close to home
First off, the entire staff needs to be commended on their efforts to make golfers feel welcome and appreciated for choosing to play at Osprey. They make you want to come back and enjoy their facilities. The course is in great shape for the early season (with regards to hole 17 that is under redesign do to other construction on the property) I highly recommend this course to both novice and advanced golfers. A true gem close to home.
Great Round
I played as a single and enjoyed the great weather. Pace of play was excellant and the course is is good condition for so early in the year.
The Osprey
This course has awesome views and great green dues!!!
Great Sunday at Osprey
The overall experience was excellent. The staff were on top of things from the pro shop to the starter to the kid cleaning your clubs at the cart return.
They had a great deal as well. 3 drinks and 3 food items were included. What a deal.
Great course
Awesome course to step your game up.. Would recommend this course to everyone. FYI ( if you're like me bring a couple extra balls might need them) lol
"Make you feel better about your game" course
OK rates, fairly simple layout, and a pretty nice journey through the course. Only a few "tough" shots to hit, but a fairly easy course overall. Birdies are definitely attainable, but the occasional implosion holes are there as well. Not really a course to write home about (Construction on 17 par 5) doesn't help the appeal either, but a fun course none-the-less. Good scores are definitely out there. Great staff as well. Just need a beverage cart.
Golf in late Nov!
Played after T-day...black Fri and Sat. It was in the 40s, but sunny. Not bad. Golf now prices were great and the cold kept the crowds away. Course is always wet so 90 degrees for carts. The grill was not open. I've been here before when it was open and it was a nice spot for an after round beverage.
Hidden gem
Haven't known about it long, but the three times I've played it, only been crowded once... Sure it's been in the "offseason" for other golfers, but it was in great shape and the greens were in spectacular condition. (Played in early October twice and Black Friday)
Tough Course
Beautiful day to play, but the course is tough. You really have to hold up on several holes and make sure you are right down the middle of the fairways on others. Needless to say I lost 20 balls since I am not yet at the place hitting level.
Much better than I expected
Even from the tips this is not very long. But much of this is due to a few extra par 3s. Many of them are challenging and fun. Fairly pretty place given that it is houses line many holes. Well maintained, greens were much faster than you might think. Not for walkers. Many tees are quite far from the previous green.
Challenging, but fun
Course was in great shape save the couple wet spots in the fairway which made some shots significantly harder. Course is challenging requiring every club in your bag (actually). Lots of danger from water/woods, but overall good course.
Great shaoe
Even though it had been raining the course was in great shape. This course is a tactical course and requires accurate shots. Greens were very receptive and was able to get tight around the pins. Overall a great day.
Fun, challenging course
Really enjoyed the course. Some very tricky par 3 and 4's, with some wicked doglegs. Would definitely play again.
Shot maker's paradise
You can't beat the scenery... And it's a good golf course too!
Tucked away on the Occoquan river is a gem of a course, with natural hazards on almost every hole.
I have always played here when my game needed some relief from the "bang the driver on 14 holes" and instead I hit driver once, on number 1. Playing conservatively and exercising patience around this course is a must for a great score. Many of the holes have 90 degree turns and being able to hit a number to have a shot at the green is a good skill to have when playing this course.
The conditions were good, greens are good, but show some wear, and the fairways have more divots, not filled, than they should, however, I love this course as I played every club in the bag and every par three was a different club.
The clubhouse is gorgeous and if it's a nice day, the deck and patio on the back of the clubhouse is perfect for watching golfers come down 18.
If you don't score well here, it's most likely because you attacked it with a driver and couldn't hit a 200 yard club off the tee to avoid most trouble; but if you can silence the big dog and skillfully think your way around, you will see the shotmaker's dream of a course as it was designed.
Always a little windy because of the river, but fair and greens roll well.
Great challenging course for the money.
I would play this course anytime for the money. Challenging but fun as well. You will loose a lot of balls so make sure you bring plenty.
